Homeowners planning a bathroom remodel in Boca Raton or Fort Lauderdale should consider the colors they use in their space, and avoid bright green, muddy yellow, cool gray, dark green, terracotta, and dark plum, according to design experts and studies from Southern Living. These shades can distort one's reflection in the mirror, create an unwelcoming atmosphere, and darken small spaces.
Colors can create illusions. For example, bright green can make someone’s face look sickly in natural light. According to a Southern Living article from 2026, a homeowner painted their bathroom bright green and “his own reflection looked unwell.” Similarly, “muddy” yellow also washed out the complexion of a person even further who appeared light-skinned, making her look like an "institution." Light or cooler grays can create a bad vibe.
Dark green can absorb light and create a green hue that can compound the distortions of lighting. Terracotta can produce a warmth that isn’t seen as flattering aside from Spanish tiles, and dark plum can highlight things like crazy paint strokes.
Identify lighting and humidity first. South Florida bathrooms often use 3000–4000 K LED lighting, which can have a blue-green tint. The humidity from showers can rise to 55% to 70% in bathrooms. Homeowners need to find a paint that's both moisture-resistant (perm of ≤ 5 perm) and has a mildew-inhibiting additive, like zinc pyrithione, which can cut the risk of mold by more than 90% in a shower. Make it also light-reflective, like a matte. One study shows that this helps light reflect an average of 12% more.
Warm beige is better than a cool gray and warms like brushed brass and copper can help offset any green bias. Finally, installing a ventilation system that keeps humidity below 55% helps nails this last point.
Permitting and code compliance varies by jurisdiction. In Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and West Palm Beach, local building codes require a minimum fan size based on the bathroom square footage, and the fan must be connected to a humidity-controlled switch.
